N.IRELAND: Residents Evacuated After Discovering Unexploded WWII Bomb

Hundreds of residents in Newtownards, County Down, have been urgently evacuated following the discovery of a suspected World War II bomb on Friday.

The unexploded device, believed to be a historic piece of munition, was located in the Rivenwood area, approximately nine miles east of Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The police response was swift, initiating a large-scale operation to secure the area and protect local residents. Upon discovery of the bomb, authorities immediately established barricades and urged motorists to avoid the vicinity as officers assessed the potential threat.

An emergency support center was quickly set up to aid those who had to relocate from their homes, offering them shelter and assistance during the uncertain situation.

Superintendent Johnston McDowell, leading the operation, addressed the community about the importance of safety and cooperation.

“Firstly, I would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding as officers continue to minimize disruption and keep residents safe,” he stated.

McDowell confirmed that police are working closely with bomb disposal experts and partner agencies to mitigate risk and ensure a thorough approach to the situation.

The clearance operation is expected to take longer than five days, during which a significant cordon will remain in place. Local residents have been directly engaged by police officers, who are maintaining a visible presence to reassure the public and update them on the ongoing efforts.

“Our priority is to keep residents and the local community safe,” McDowell added.

“While we understand the significant disruption this may cause, the safety of our citizens is paramount.” He expressed appreciation for the local support and reiterated a call for the public to avoid the area until it is declared safe.

Residents have responded with both concern and resilience as they navigate the evacuation process. Many have expressed gratitude for the swift action taken by police, even as they face the challenge of temporary displacement.

The emergency support center has provided a critical lifeline, allowing families to access necessary resources during this unforeseen crisis.
