Nairobi County has launched a groundbreaking mobile application, assistALL, to provide on-demand Sign Language interpretation services at health facilities across the county.
Developed by Signs Media Kenya Limited, the assistALL app aims to bridge the communication gap between deaf patients and healthcare providers. Over 50 healthcare workers from Level 4 and 5 hospitals will be trained in its use, in partnership with the Kenya Institute of Special Education.
“With just Ksh.30, a user can access a sign language interpreter through the app, making healthcare more inclusive for the deaf community,” said Luke Muleka, founder of Signs Media.
The service is already active in Busia and Mandera counties, boasting over 12,000 downloads, 500 interpreters, and more than 82,000 minutes of use. It’s available on Android, iOS, M-Pesa Super App, and as a web application.
Beyond healthcare, assistALL is now being deployed in the education, judiciary, and financial sectors, creating employment opportunities for interpreters and empowering the deaf community.
