Defence Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale has revealed that the Nairobi County Government will be tasked with running Uhuru Park and Central Park recreation centres once ongoing renovations at the two grounds are completed.
Duale made the announcement when he toured the two parks recently alongside Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
The parks, Duale added, will be handed over to the Nairobi County government in time for the Nairobi Festival week slated for December 11 to December 16, 2023.
“Except for a few final touches, the facility is ready for handover to the County Government of Nairobi and ready for the citizens to enjoy its modern amenities,” Duale is quoted as saying by Nairobi News.
The two parks have been undergoing renovations since September 2021 under the stewardship of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) in a bid to transform them to international park standards.
The parks are set to play host to several recreation points among them an outdoor gym, jogging tracks, botanical trails and a skating park.
Uhuru Park will also feature several eateries and high-end hotels, while the iconic Nyayo statue and Mau Mau freedom fighters’ monuments have been maintained as well as a more defined freedom corner in remembrance of Prof. Wangari Maathai.
