Nairobi County Workers To Stage Protests As Strike Notice Lapses

This is not the first time City Hall staff are threatening to strike over delayed salaries. In February, they downed tools for similar reasons among other issues, but the strike was called off after an agreement was reached between the union and Nairobi County officials.

A section of Nairobi City County workers have issued a threat to down tools from Monday over what they say is an unwillingness by City Hall to address their grievances.

The Kenya County Government Workers Union had issued a seven-day strike notice of their intention to proceed on strike starting July 4.

Among the issues cited by the union are persistent salary delays, failure to complete promotion of all eligible staff, unwillingness to finalise a pay rise negotiation, perennial electricity disconnections and failure to pay NHIF premiums and remit monthly deductions.

Nairobi Staff Branch Secretary Festus Ngari accused City Hall of failing to address the issues they raised.
