Nairobi Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Police Officer in Businesswoman Torture Case

Senior police officer Rebecca Njeri Muraya and Sergeant Abdisalam Ahmed in court

A Nairobi court has issued an arrest warrant for senior police officer Rebecca Njeri Muraya after she failed to attend her trial on charges of torture and abuse of office.

Muraya, who is charged alongside Sergeant Abdisalam Ahmed, was expected to appear at Milimani Law Courts but claimed to be unwell. Her legal team, however, provided no medical documents or official communication to support the claim.

The prosecution opposed the excuse and requested an arrest warrant, calling her absence unjustified. Chief Magistrate Lukas Onyina agreed and issued the warrant, citing the lack of evidence for her nonattendance.

The two officers are accused of unlawfully arresting and detaining businesswoman Ayni Hussein Mahammud at Muthaiga Police Station for two days in what prosecutors say was an attempt to intimidate her from pursuing an assault complaint against Abdihakim Saidi Jama.

The incident allegedly took place on December 31, 2021, at Eastleigh North Police Station in Nairobi. The officers have both pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include torture and a second count of abuse of office.

The case is set to be mentioned again on May 19, 2025.
