Nairobi motorists will pay parking fees using a new system developed by the county government beginning Friday, September 2.
This is in response to Nairobi Governor Sakaja’s directive to serve the county’s ties with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
Sakaja announced on Monday that he had returned revenue collection to the county government. This means that the parking payment platform used by Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) will be phased out.
To pay parking fees, motorists must currently dial *647#, which is directly linked to a KRA account.
Nairobi City County Director of Parking Tom Tinega said the new system’s creators were fine-tuning it before releasing it to the public.
“We are finalizing our systems, and the public will be notified of the new short code that they will be using to pay their parking fees by the end of the week,” Tinega said.
The Director also stated that they are disengaging with KRA because they don’t know how much money is being collected.
“We were never allowed to know how the system worked or even how much money was collected in a day,” he said.
Sakaja also stated that the taxman was not meeting previously established targets set by county officials when they were in charge of revenue collection.
