Nairobi Leaders Urge Youth to Reject Political Manipulation Ahead of Saba Saba Protests

A group of Nairobi legislators has called on the youth not to allow themselves to be exploited by politicians seeking to hijack the Saba Saba protests scheduled for Monday.

In a joint press briefing held Sunday, the lawmakers expressed concern that what began as legitimate, peaceful demonstrations are increasingly being infiltrated by political opportunists and criminal elements, leading to destruction, chaos, and loss of life.

“What should have been peaceful expressions of concern have been turned into violent confrontations,” the leaders said. “Shops have been looted, businesses destroyed, lives lost, and dangerous tribal rhetoric has crept into our streets.”

The leaders including Nairobi Woman Rep Esther Passaris, Nominated Senators Tabitha Mutinda and Karen Nyamu, Makadara MP George Aladwa, and Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor (Jalang’o) urged fellow politicians to prioritize national unity over political ambition.

“It’s easy to stir emotions. But real leadership is tested in moments like this—when restraint, unity and responsibility are needed most,” the statement read.

They also sent a blunt warning to divisive leaders: “If your politics depends on dividing Kenyans, you’ve already failed.”

The MPs said the youth should stay vigilant and reject being used as pawns in political games. They noted that ordinary Kenyans are more concerned with jobs, safety, economic stability, and affordable living than political theatrics.
