A night out turned into a nightmare for a Nairobi man after he was allegedly drugged and robbed of KSh290,000 and a high-end smartphone by two men he met at a club along River Road.
Simon Katumo, the victim, had gone out for drinks when he encountered two men, later identified as James Githinji and Brian Kamau. According to police reports, the trio shared drinks at the establishment, after which Katumo lost consciousness.
He later awoke in his apartment, disoriented and unable to recall how he got there. Upon regaining full awareness, Katumo realized his mobile phone was missing and discovered that KSh290,000 had been withdrawn from his M-Pesa account and linked bank accounts.
He reported the incident at Nairobi Central Police Station, prompting detectives to launch an investigation. Using mobile money transaction records and CCTV footage from the club, investigators were able to trace and apprehend the suspects.
Githinji and Kamau were arrested and taken into custody. They were arraigned on Wednesday before Principal Magistrate Stephanie Beth at the Makadara Law Courts, where they pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court granted each suspect a cash bail of KSh100,000 pending further proceedings.
Police have urged the public to exercise caution when socializing with strangers in nightlife settings, warning of a rise in similar cases involving drugging and digital theft.
