Nairobi, Kenya – June 16, 2025 — Nairobi Central Police Station Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Samson Talaam, is currently appearing before Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi at the Milimani Law Courts in connection with the controversial death of 31-year-old teacher and social media influencer, Albert Ojwang’.
The officer, named last week by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Director Mohamed Amin as the prime suspect in Ojwang’s death, has maintained his innocence through his legal counsel. Talaam claims he was not present at the police station when Ojwang was taken into custody.
Speaking through his lawyer, Talaam told the court that he only arrived at the station after being informed that Ojwang’ was in critical condition. The officer’s arrest and court appearance follow mounting public outrage and sustained pressure from civil society and political leaders demanding accountability.
Ojwang’, who died under unclear circumstances while in police custody earlier this month, is believed to have been a victim of police brutality, a case that has reignited national debate on extrajudicial killings and abuse of power within the National Police Service.
DCI boss Amin had earlier told the Senate that preliminary investigations pointed to Talaam’s involvement in the illegal detention and alleged torture of Ojwang’. His statement has since fueled calls for immediate prosecutions of all officers implicated in the incident.
As the court session continues, investigations into the incident remain ongoing, with Kenyans closely watching the proceedings amid growing demands for justice. A National Day of Remembrance for victims of police violence is planned for June 25.
