Nairobi Resident Challenges Azimio Act

The Political Parties (Amendment) Act, 2021, as signed into law by President Uhuru Kenyatta on January 27, 2022, has been challenged at the Milimani Law Courts.

The petitioner, Nairobi resident Salesio Mutuma Thuranira, is now seeking an injunction to prevent the bill’s implementation, claiming that it jeopardizes Kenyans’ political rights and the electoral commission’s independence.

He also wants the court to issue an injunction prohibiting the IEBC and the Registrar of Political Parties from enacting or acting on the Political Parties (Amendment) Act, 2021.

The petitioner claims that the Bill was passed in the National Assembly without public input through lawyer Elias Mutuma.
