Nairobi City County and its environs may soon receive more water after the completion of the Northern water collector tunnel project.
The Sh.8.2 billion projects, which is designed to improve water flows at Ndakaini Dam and is being implemented in Murang’a County, is already 97 percent complete.
When reviewing the project in the Makombi area on Thursday, Acting Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Mr. James Macharia stated that the remaining 3% of the tunnel will be accelerated to ensure that the people of Nairobi have more water.
The tunnel and water treatment facility at Kigoro in Murang’a are finished, he said, adding that the only thing left is to lay pipes for the remaining 34.5 kilometers from the treatment plant to Gigiri.
“The contractor has laid pipes from Kigoro treatment plant in 20.7 kilometers out of a total of 55.224 kilometers. The government is committed to ensuring the remaining works are completed before July this year,” he said.
Once completed, the project will enable an additional 140 million liters of water to be supplied to Nairobi on a daily basis.
“The increased water supply will be of great relief to more than 1.2 million residents of Nairobi and its environs reducing water deficit,” he stated.
