Nairobi Water Employee in Court Over Ksh 9M Earned Through Fake Certificate

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has brought forward criminal charges against a staff member of Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Limited (NCWSC) over allegations of academic fraud and embezzlement.

Appearing before the Nairobi Anti-Corruption Court, Edwin Amagola Munyeti, a Marketing Assistant at NCWSC, was accused of forging a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate.

The prosecution, led by counsel Thelma Nanjaya, alleged that Munyeti falsified the document in the name of Munyeti Edwin Amakola, claiming a mean grade of C+, purporting it to be a legitimate certificate issued by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

According to the prosecution, Munyeti used the forged document to secure employment at NCWSC, ultimately earning Ksh. 9,080,267 in salary, which the state now classifies as fraudulently acquired public property.

He faced multiple counts including forgery, uttering a false document, and providing false information to a public institution. The charges highlight growing concerns over the integrity of recruitment processes in state-owned institutions.

Munyeti denied all charges before Principal Magistrate Celesa Okore and was released on a bond of Ksh. 500,000. The court scheduled the next mention of the case for May 26, 2025.

The DPP’s move underscores ongoing efforts to root out fraudulent practices within public service, particularly those involving forged academic qualifications.
