Namibia’s President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has dismissed Agriculture Minister Mac-Albert Hengari following his arrest over serious criminal allegations.
In a statement issued on Sunday via X, the presidency said: “By virtue of the powers vested in the President by Article 32(6) of the Constitution of the Republic of Namibia, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has relieved Hon. Dr. Mac-Albert Hengari of his duties as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform.”
Hengari was arrested on Saturday over multiple charges, including rape, gender-based violence, and kidnapping, according to local media.
Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the circumstances of his departure, with Hengari claiming, “I resigned as minister, but I cannot comment further.”
It is alleged that Hengari raped a 21-year-old woman and later attempted to bribe her to withdraw a case she had filed against him last year.
Hengari was appointed Agriculture Minister in March 2025 after being named among President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s top eight parliamentary candidates.
His sudden downfall comes as investigations into the allegations continue.
The scandal has triggered public outrage in Namibia, with calls for accountability and transparency as authorities proceed with their inquiries.
