Narrow bee ‘Nairobi fly’ invade Kabarnet town

A swarm of narrow bee flies better known as “Nairobi fly” has invaded Kabarnet town in Baring County forcing residents to close down businesses – By Prudence Wanza.

The insects have caused a major scare in the county headquarters and could be attributed to the heavy rains being experienced across the country as they thrive in such conditions.

A community leader who spoke to a local TV station said the infestation of the insects could be a plague like the locust invasion further urging the residents to be cautious.

The narrow bee fly does not sting or bite but when it’s anti-like body is crushed on any part of the body it releases toxin spils to the skin which causes itching, burning sensation and swelling.

Experts say recommended treatment includes antihistamines and antibiotics.

Narrow bee flies are commonly found in wet areas and usually appear during periods of heavy rains that form an adequate environment for them to multiply.

The residents are now urging the county government to spray the insects
