Samir Nasri, a former Arsenal, Manchester City, and France international midfielder, has retired from football at the age of 34.
Nasri blamed his football career’s demise on a 2018 doping violation, according to French publication Le Journal du Dimanche.
After being found guilty of a doping offence in 2018, he received an 18-month UEFA suspension.
He is said to have taken therapy at a clinic in Los Angeles in 2016, in violation of World Anti-Doping Agency standards.
Nasri said: “An episode hurt me very badly and changed my relationship with football: my suspension.
“I found that more than unfair, I had not taken any doping product. It was just an injection of vitamins because I was sick. It cut me off in my tracks.”
Nasri moved to Arsenal from Marseille in 2008 and played for the Gunners for three years before joining Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in 2011.
