National Assembly Sets May 26th IEBC Nominee Approval Hearings

The National Assembly will hold approval hearings for nominees to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Monday, May 26th, 2025. Ahead of the vetting process, the public has been invited to submit sworn written statements (affidavits) regarding the suitability of the nominees by Wednesday, May 21st, at 5:00 p.m.

According to a notification issued on May 9th, 2025, by the Speaker of the National Assembly, the names and credentials of the nominees, forwarded by President William Ruto, have been referred to the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs for review and reporting to the House.

President Ruto has nominated Erastus Edung Ethekon, 48, as the new Chairperson of the IEBC. The six nominees for commissioner positions represent diverse regions across the country. They include Ann Nderitu (Nyandarua), currently the Registrar of Political Parties; Moses Alutalala Mukhwana (Kakamega); Mary Karen Sorobit (Uasin Gishu); Hassan Noor Hassan (Mandera); Francis Odhiambo Aduol (Kisumu); and Fahima Araphat Abdallah (Lamu).

The vetting process marks a crucial step in reconstituting the IEBC, which has been under scrutiny and awaiting new leadership following recent electoral reforms.
