National Land Commission Holds Historic Land Injustices Hearing in Makueni

In a landmark move aimed at addressing long-standing land grievances, the National Land Commission (NLC) on Monday held a public hearing on historical land injustices (HLI) at the Wote Green Park Amphitheatre in Makueni County.

The session, attended by local residents, elected leaders, and national officials, is part of the NLC’s countrywide effort to investigate and resolve disputes rooted in past injustices. Of the 14 cases presented by Makueni residents, only eight met the legal threshold to be considered under Article 67(2)(e) of the Constitution and Section 15 of the NLC Act.

Before the hearings commenced, the NLC delegation, led by Vice Chairperson Gertrude Nguku, Commissioner Hon. Tiyah Galgalo, and HLI Secretariat lead Edmond Gichuru, paid a courtesy call to Makueni Governor Hon. Mutula Kilonzo Jr. The governor commended the Commission’s progress, particularly its resolution of the long-running boundary conflict between Makueni and Taita Taveta Counties in Mtito Andei.

Governor Mutula Jr. also urged the Commission to expedite investigations into unresolved disputes, notably in Manooni, Mulima, and on the delayed issuance of allotment letters to residents of Kathonzweni.

The NLC team later held discussions with Makueni County Commissioner Duncan Darusi, who raised concerns over disputes involving state institutions and local communities, particularly around South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) land in Emali and the contested Dwa Farm.

At the conclusion of the hearing, panel Chair Commissioner Prof. James Tuitoek directed the involved parties to file final written submissions within 14 days. The Commission will then begin drafting its determinations and final recommendations.

This public hearing marks a critical phase in the NLC’s mission to provide justice, restore trust, and ensure fair land ownership and access across the country, especially for communities that have endured historical dispossession and marginalization.
