National Treasury Releases Ksh 31 Billion To Counties

The National Treasury has released Sh31 billion to counties to alleviate the financial pain in the devolved units.

Speaking while appearing before the Senate County Public Accounts Committee on Thursday 20th April, the Council of Governors chairperson Anne Waiguru said that counties received pending funds for January.

“We have received the money for January. The balance was Sh125 billion but it’s now Sh94 billion,” she said.

Waiguru faulted county budget roll-overs on the delay in disbursement of funds to counties, urging for timely release of monies.

“We have never been here. I have been a governor for five years and it’s really a very critical situation at the counties,” she said.

The governor said the financial crisis in the counties is dire as the devolved units are yet to receive funds for the months of February, March, and April.

He expressed concerns that while the counties continue to suffer, COG has maintained “unusual” silence.

The governor said the COG has been ‘silently’ engaging the constitution.

“We may not make noise in the media all the time but engage the Treasury all the time. By the time we get to the media, then it’s serious,” she said.
