NCIC Adds ‘Hatupangwingwi’ To List Of Hate Speech Terms

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has released a list of commonly used terms that are now considered hate speech and may result in legal action if they are used.

With the General Election only four months away, NCIC head Samuel Kobia warned that the phrases contained in the lexicon could provoke conflict between two or more ethnic groups in Kenya.

“As such, this remains a living document since the terms and the coded language shall be regularly updated for use in the social media tracking of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission,” he said.

However, Kobia stressed that the vocabulary should not be viewed as a full list of hate speech terminology, as some of the keywords could be used inadvertently and out of context.

Here is the list of the hate speech terms:

Kill

Kaffir

Madoa doa

Chunga Kura

Kama noma noma 

Kwekwe 

Mende

Hatupangwingwi 

Operation Linda kura 

Watu wa kurusha mawe 

Watajua hawajui  

Wabara waende kwao

Wakuja (Those that come)
