NCIC Unveils Peace Panel Ahead of Elections

The Kenya Eminent Panel for Peace has been appointed by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).

The panel will be convened by Ambassador Francis Muthaura, with Justice (Rtd) Joyce Aluoch serving as co-convener.

The faith leaders of the committee are Archbishop Anthony Muheria, Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit, and Archbishop Phillip Anyolo.

Bishop Emeritus Stephen Kewasis, a peace and reconciliation expert, will also serve on the panel, with NCIC Chairman Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia serving as an ex-officio member.

Others include Lt Gen (Rtd) Daniel Opande and Lt Gen (Rtd) Lazarus Sumbeiywo, who will serve as mediators, and Nerima Wako and Sheikh Hamad Kassim, who will serve as youth and faith leaders, respectively.

Dr. Vimal Shah is the panel’s corporate leader, and Fatuma Abdikadir is the panel’s expert in sports for peace and faith. The body also includes governance expert Catherine Musakali and public engagement expert Chancellor Robert Mutula.

Some of their responsibilities include facilitating dialogue and mediation between disputing parties and fostering political solutions. In addition to mobilizing Kenyans to respect and uphold the rule of law and diffuse political tension, the panel will oversee the mediation of politically related conflict.

They are also expected to facilitate effective communication among disputing parties and to facilitate negotiations for common positions in the interest of Kenyans’ well-being.

“We call on the Kenyan voters to listen to and comply with the instructions of IEBC on how to conduct themselves regarding the elections. Let us cooperate with the official instructions of the IEBC to ensure that the election process is completed well and transparently. We also highly welcome the various observer missions, which are here to observe the Kenyan election,” NCIC said in a statement.
