Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has alleged that the government is planning to increase school fees for day scholars by ksh.9,374 by the start of January 2026 calender.
Speaking during a press briefing at his Nairobi office, Nyoro claimed that there is a proposal that has already been factored in the Ministry of Education’s fee structure for 2026.
Nyoro accused the government of planning to grab the benefits of day schools in Kenya and this will overburden the parents and guardians who are already squeezed and struggling.
“If the govt is testing the waters in wanting to increase school fees for day school learners, I want to give the report that the path is very slippery,, We’re not going to allow the gains of free basic education to be annihilated by a government that has an appetite for money” Nyoro said.
The Kiharu legislator also has criticised the renewal of Junior Secondary Interns (JSS) contracts, stating that they had been hired on one-year contract and they should be confirmed instead of being forced to sign new contracts.
