Nelson Havi Appointed Chairperson Of Retirement Benefits Authority Board

Nelson Havi, the former President of the Law Society of Kenya, has been appointed Chairperson of the Retirement Benefits Authority’s Board of Directors.

Njuguna Ndung’u, the Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Economic Planning, made the announcement in the Kenya Gazette on Friday. Havi will serve for three years beginning February 10, 2023.

This appointment follows the revocation of Abdirahin H. Abdi’s previous appointment.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (f) and 6 (a) of the Retirement Benefits Authority Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the appoints Nelson Havi to be a Member and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Retirement Benefits Authority for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 10th February 2023. The appointment of Abdirahin H. Abdi is revoked,” part of the notice published in the Kenya Gazette stated.

On July 5, 2022, Abdi was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors.

He previously served as Chairman of the Insurance Regulatory Authority’s Board of Directors and has led a number of other businesses.

The Retirement Benefits Authority has ten members on its board.

Charles Machira (CEO), Joseph Z. Ngugi (Alternate Director representing the CS Treasury), Dr. James Chelanga, Margaret Gaitirira, Wyckliffe M. Shamiah, Hussein Alinoor Ibrahim, Godfrey K. Kiptum, Dr. Margaret M. Makumi, and Praxidis Saisi (Board Secretary) are the other members of the board.

Nelson Havi was in December of last year, named as one of the Public Service Commission’s eight shortlisted candidates for the position of solicitor general (PSC).

Havi also ran for the Westlands parliamentary seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket but was defeated by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) incumbent Timothy Wanyonyi.
