Nelson Havi Resigns from President Ruto’s UDA Party

Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has resigned from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the ruling party led by President William Ruto.

In a letter dated November 7, 2025, and addressed to the party’s Secretary General with a copy to the Registrar of Political Parties, Havi confirmed his immediate resignation in line with Section 14 of the Political Parties Act.

“I hereby give notice of resignation as a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) effective today… Please notify the Registrar of Political Parties of my resignation to enable the removal of my name from the membership list of the party,” his letter stated.

Havi did not cite reasons for his decision to quit the ruling party, which he joined in 2021. His departure adds to the quiet churn within UDA’s political ranks as the party gears up for the 2027 General Election.

The prominent lawyer and former LSK boss had joined UDA to contest the Westlands parliamentary seat in the 2022 elections, a race he ultimately lost. At the time, he was welcomed into the party by then Deputy President William Ruto, who described Havi as “a bold professional who understands reform.”

Since leaving elective politics, Havi has maintained a relatively low political profile, occasionally commenting on governance and constitutional issues. His resignation now raises speculation about his next political move or possible re-engagement with the legal fraternity.

UDA officials had not issued an official statement by press time, and it remains unclear whether Havi’s resignation signals wider disquiet among the party’s professional wing or is a personal decision to step away from active partisan politics.
