Havi Protests Scrapping Of Degree Qualification For Governors

On Friday, he tweeted, "The Attorney General ought to appeal against the decisions eliminating a degree as an eligibility requirement for election of Governors, MPs, and MCAs."

The Attorney General should appeal the Court’s decision to eliminate a degree as a requirement for running for governor, former LSK President Nelson Havi now says.

Havi questioned how “illiterate” leaders are supposed to run the country and suggested that the AG appeal the directive to the Court of Appeal.

On Friday, he tweeted, “The Attorney General ought to appeal against the decisions eliminating a degree as an eligibility requirement for election of Governors, MPs, and MCAs.”

He went on to question the value of higher education if a degree is not needed to hold important government positions.

“What is the purpose of establishment of all these Universities if illiteracy is the qualification for elective leadership?”

His remarks come after Justice Anthony Mrima declared section 22(2) of the Elections Act unconstitutional in a Friday ruling.

The Act states that “A person may be nominated as a candidate for election as President, Deputy President, County Governor or deputy County Governor only if the person is a holder of a degree from a university recognized in Kenya.”
