The National Environment Management Authority has reported that several containers of sodium cyanide are missing after an accident in Rironi.
The truck carrying the chemical was involved in the collision along Nairobi-Mai Mahiu road on Saturday, July 20th.
“We urge the public to be vigilant and report any sightings of these containers to the nearest police station or Chiefs’ office,” said a statement from the Kenya National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
Sodium cyanide is a highly toxic substance that can cause serious harm to humans and animals if ingested, inhaled, or exposed to skin. Prolonged exposure can lead to respiratory problems, neurological damage, and even death.
The Kenya Red Cross Society has been deployed to the scene to assist in the rescue efforts and provide medical attention to those affected.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident
“We are doing our best to recover as many of the missing containers as possible,” said Chief Inspector of Police, Joseph Ochieng. “We urge members of the public to cooperate with our efforts and report any information that can aid in our investigation.”
The Nairobi-Nakuru highway was closed in both directions as a precautionary measure.
Those who have information about the missing containers are urged to contact the police or NEMA immediately.
