Nepal’s Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has stepped down from office, his secretariat confirmed in a statement on Tuesday.
In a statement personally signed by Oli, he said his resignation was meant to “pave the way for a constitutional solution” to the deepening political crisis that has gripped the country in recent weeks.
The announcement came against a backdrop of widespread unrest.
Protesters took to the streets in Kathmandu and other major towns, attacking and vandalizing residences of senior politicians, including those of Oli himself and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. Several political party headquarters were also targeted in the violence.
Mohan Regmi, executive director of the Civil Service Hospital, told the BBC that at least two people died during Tuesday’s clashes, while 90 others are undergoing treatment for injuries.
Oli’s departure now throws Nepal’s political future into uncertainty, with growing calls for urgent reforms and dialogue to stabilize the country’s fragile democracy.
