Netflix is trying to put an end to the tradition of sharing passwords by adding in a new feature that will catch people in the act.
The people watching with a shared password will be meet with a screen pop up asking whether this is your account. And if yes they will ask you to verify that you are indeed the owner of that account via a code sent either by text or email.
A Netflix spokesperson said “The test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so, apparently one third of all Netflix users have shared their passwords to others outside of their household.
Last year august Netflix introduced a watch free option where people without an account can watch a handful of original movies and TV shows before getting a subscription.
This new system which is still in its early stages isn’t a fool proof way to prevent password sharing but it’s possibly the start of a new era.
