The Netherlands staged a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat Turkey 2-1 and reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
The Dutch side, led by coach Ronald Koeman, overturned a one-goal deficit to secure a spot in the last four of the tournament.
Turkey, who had been impressing throughout the competition, took the lead on 35 minutes when Samet Akaydin nodded home Arda Guler’s cross.
The goal seemed to spark Turkey into life, and they dominated much of the first half.
However, Koeman’s men refused to give up, and they began to gain a foothold in the game after the interval.
Stefan de Vrij equalized for the Netherlands on 70 minutes, rising high to power home Memphis Depay’s cross.
The comeback was completed just six minutes later when Mert Muldur inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Cody Gakpo, following a probing ball from Denzel Dumfries. The goal sent the Dutch bench into raptures and effectively ended Turkey’s hopes.
The victory sets up a mouth-watering semi-final clash between the Netherlands and England, who earlier today edged Switzerland 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra-time in Dusseldorf. The match will be played on Wednesday at the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
“It was a great team effort,” said Koeman after the game. “We knew we had to dig deep and find a way back into the game. The players showed great character and determination to come from behind and win.”
For Turkey, it was a disappointing exit from the tournament, but they can take pride in their performances throughout. “We gave it our all, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough,” said Turkey coach Senol Gunes. “We’re proud of our boys for getting this far, but we’re already looking forward to the next challenge.”
The Netherlands will now focus on preparing for their semi-final showdown with England, while Turkey will head home with their heads held high after an impressive run at Euro 2024.
