New Members Sworn into Media Complaints Commission

Milimani Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Division Presiding Judge Lucy Njuguna on Monday presided over the swearing-in of Lucy Minayo Lugatia and Anthony Nzau Musau as new members of the Media Complaints Commission, marking a renewed commitment to upholding media accountability and public trust.

Speaking during the ceremony held at Milimani Law Courts, Judge Njuguna emphasized the weight of responsibility placed on the new commissioners, urging them to uphold the principles of impartiality, diligence, and respect in their mandate. “As you begin your term, you’ll encounter complaints that demand careful listening, equitable judgment, and clear communication,” she stated. “Your decisions must be rigorous, timely, and grounded in sound and solid evidence.”

She further highlighted that the Commission plays a vital role in democratic governance, acting as a neutral arbiter in disputes involving the media, government, and the public. “Decisions, even when difficult, must be made, explained, and documented. Recommendations should be actionable and pragmatic,” Judge Njuguna advised.

The ceremony was attended by key stakeholders in the media sector, including Media Complaints Commission Chair Demas Kiprono and Media Council of Kenya Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo. Both expressed confidence in the newly sworn-in members and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to fostering ethical journalism and protecting press freedom.

Ms Lugatia and Mr Musau will serve a three-year term. The Media Complaints Commission is a statutory body established under the Media Council Act to mediate and adjudicate complaints relating to media conduct and content.

Their appointment comes at a time when the media landscape is evolving rapidly, with increased scrutiny over press practices, misinformation, and freedom of expression. Their role will be crucial in ensuring balance between media freedom and responsibility.
