New Twist in Rex Masai Murder Probe as Officer Denies Being in Photos Presented by IPOA from Day of Shooting

Police Constable Isaiah Murangeri appeared in court for a second time after he was called back for cross examination.

Officer Murangeri is said to have been deployed alongside a unit called Alpha-Mike which he claimed was an anti-mugging unit.

During his cross examination, he stated that he was in civilian clothing but had no recollection of the exact attire he had on.

He maintained that he was deployed at KICC on 20th July 2024 and that he had not moved.

He was also questioned on his whereabouts on the 18th July 2024, he stated that he was not on duty on the said day and that he had a sick child to tend to.

Prosecution however presented photos that portrayed someone with uncanny similarities to Murangiri. The officer however strongly denied saying that he was not the person in the photos.

Tension further escalated in court when the prosecution pointed out a birthmark on the left side of Murangiri’s face which was also visible on the photo’s of the police officer presented in court.

Metadata extracted from the photos along with phone records extracted by forensics placed him along Uhuru Highway on the 18th.

The prosecution requested that the police arms movement records be submitted to court and that all officers involved report to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for further investigation.

Lawyers for Masai’s family insisted that certified arms movement records exist and should be considered original evidence.

Presiding Magistrate Geoffrey Onsaringo directed that all officers yet to testify must present themselves to IPOA and ordered the arms movement logs be handed over to the prosecution.

The hearing continues tomorrow.
