The Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA) on Thursday, May 11 explained the new technology used at the Mlolongo weighbridge to ease movement.
According to Athi River Weighbridge Cluster manager Willie Thuku, the technology has aided in traffic management and ensuring that all vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes are weighed.
“The high-speed weighing motion has helped as it filters 80 percent of the vehicles,” Thuku said adding that the yard was almost empty as compliance had gone up.
He pointed out that the fines for overloading are quite severe, and that most transporters have chosen to adhere to axle load limits.
“At the weighbridge stations, we use the East Africa Community Vehicle Load Control Act 2016 which is very punitive for overloaders as it comprises hefty fines and fees they must pay. For that reason we have had many transporters comply as most of them join saccos and engage in their sensitization meetings,” he added.
He also stated that they will make every effort to disseminate information about what is required by law in terms of axle load compliance.
“We have intensified our mobile operations and we are making every effort to ensure that everyone on the roads complies. We have three mobile vehicles and in a day we have an average of a vehicle per mobile team.”
