With his World Cup goal against Croatia, Neymar equaled Brazil icon Pele’s ‘official’ goalscoring record of 77 for the men’s national team.
Fifa, the world governing body, recognizes the record, but the Brazilian Football Confederation and Pele do not since he claims to have scored 95 goals.
Fifa only counts games between two nations, whereas Pele scored in friendly against club teams.
Neymar has 124 Brazil appearances, matching Pele’s 92-game total.
Pele, who led Brazil to three World Cup victories in 1958, 1962, and 1970, is presently undergoing treatment in a hospital in Sao Paulo.
Neymar’s total is not a Brazilian record; Marta has scored 115 goals for the women’s team since 2002.
