Governor Charity Ngilu has once again sent a strong warning to anybody found gathering sand away from the areas allocated by the County Government of Kitui.
When speaking to sand harvesters in Kyanundu and Ndalani communities along River Kivou in Mwingi Central Sub-County, the governor noted sand barons were the major cause of the degrading Kitui climate.
I am saddened that sand harvesting is still ongoing, however, it’s all coming to a harsh end….. I am again saying, woe and war into those that will be found harvesting outside Kiromboko area….” She said.
Governor Ngilu, who was accompanied by Kitui County Police Commander Mr. Mathias Mang’ira, issued a harsh warning to County officials who collude with sand barons in the trade, which has yet to be authorized in Kitui County.
Due to a significant shift in Kitui’s ecology, sand harvesting has been prohibited. The greater Kitui County eco-system has greatly improved since the prohibition, much to the relief of local residents who reported illegal activities to the county administration.
