Former Nairobi County Assembly deputy speaker Ken Ngondi is set to make a political comeback after the ODM chose him for the position of speaker.
Ngondi is the sole candidate of the Orange Democratic Movement party in the race, having been unanimously endorsed by the party and a group of Azimio-allied MCAs-elect.
Between 2013 and 2017, he was deputy speaker under the late Alex Ole Magelo.
The former legislator also served as ward representative for Kware Ward in the Embakasi South constituency and chaired the county assembly’s Health committee.
He exuded confidence in his understanding of their needs, having served as a ward representative.
“I have expressed my interest in becoming the next Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly based on my experience as Deputy Speaker,” Ngondi said.
“I bring a wealth of experience to the table.” I’ve served as a councilor, chair of the Public Health Committee, and deputy speaker. I held both positions for five years.”
Ngondi abandoned his plans to run on an ODM ticket for the Embakasi South constituency seat in favor of incumbent Julius Mawathe.

Raila Odinga, the presidential candidate for the Azimio la Umoja One Coalition, announced in April 2022 that Nairobi’s speaker position would be given to the ODM party.
His bid, however, raises the prospect of a tussle within Azimio for the speaker’s post, as the Jubilee party announced Harrison Wangoro as its candidate on Friday.
Wangoro ran for Embakasi North parliamentary seat on a Jubilee ticket but was defeated by a UDA candidate.
UDA is also expected to put forward a candidate for speaker.
Out of the city’s 85 wards, UDA secured 36 seats in the Nairobi Assembly and ODM 35.
As newly elected MCAs prepare to be sworn in, lobbying for speaker’s elections will begin.
The election of the 47 speakers is supposed to take place immediately after the MCAs are sworn in, according to the law.
The Standing Orders also state that the first sitting will only have two items on the order paper: the election of the speaker and the swearing-in of members.
