Nigeria and Türkiye have agreed to strengthen economic and diplomatic relations, with both countries setting a target of five billion dollars in annual trade volume.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made this known on Tuesday in Ankara during a joint press conference with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is on a state visit to Türkiye. He said both governments had already begun discussions aimed at expanding commercial engagement and investment flows.
Current trade between Nigeria and Türkiye stands at about two billion dollars annually. Türkiye exports aircraft, industrial machinery, iron and steel, and chemical products to Nigeria, while Nigeria supplies crude oil and agricultural commodities to the Turkish market.
President Erdogan said the newly established Joint Economy and Trade Committee would serve as a key platform for boosting bilateral trade and encouraging greater Turkish investment in Nigeria. He described the committee as a strategic tool for coordinating policies and identifying new business opportunities.
The Turkish leader also commended President Tinubu’s economic reform efforts, particularly in the energy sector, noting that recent restructuring measures had contributed to broader economic stability.
He expressed optimism that cooperation between the Turkish Petroleum Corporation and Nigerian energy institutions would deliver tangible benefits to both countries.
During the briefing, President Erdogan highlighted security cooperation as a major area of focus. He reaffirmed Türkiye’s readiness to support Nigeria in addressing insurgency and terrorism, drawing on its own experience in combating similar threats.
