NIS Officers Suspected Of Stealing Sh16O Million From Sacco, Arraigned In Court

Twelve National Intelligence Service officers have been arraigned in court over allegations of stealing Ksh.166 million from National Intelligence Services’ (NIS) Njiwa Sacco in Kiambu County’s Kahawa Law Court.

The prosecution presented a 57-page charge sheet with 232 charges against the accused. Among the charges include abuse of office, conspiracy to swindle, and stealing by servant forgery.

The twelve cops, represented by lawyer Danstan Omari, had disputed the charges on the grounds that the charge sheet was flawed due to its size and the amount of counts, which would likely take an entire court working day to read to the accused.

In dismissing an application by the twelve employees who are expected to take plea over the stealing of Ksh.166 million from the savings society, the court noted that the Law does not provide guidelines of the number of charges the prosecution has to put in a charge sheet neither does the Constitution restrict the ODPP from preferring as many charges as they deem.

The suspects include; Amos Kipchumba who was the internal auditor, the loans manager Violet Wali, the accountant Caren Langat and system analysts Hamisi Zaunga and Miriam Nthenya.

Others are a teller identified as Nicodemus Osiemo, Eric Rono from Sure-step Systems, Moses Ntoinya, an NIS officer who allegedly colluded with the Sacco staff to siphon the funds, Tony Wabomba a former employee of the Njiwa Sacco society, Karen Jepkemboi, Daniel Mweteri and Sammy Afubwa.

The court was told that Mirriam Nthenya fell ill while in cell and was taken to Agha Khan Hospital where she is admitted and receiving treatment. She has been granted a personal bond of 10 million by the court.
