Team Dispatched To Probe River Nithi Accident

The team wants to understand why the area is becoming a constant death trap and take action to tame the trend

A multi agency team has been sent to the River Nithi, in Tharaka Nithi where at least 30 people died in an accident last night.

The death toll rose over night as rescuers dug through the river to get the victims.

The accidents happened after a Mombasa-bound bus the passengers were travelling in plunged into River Nithi along the Meru-Nairobi highway.

Police said the bus, which was travelling from Maua, fell off the bridge into the river about 40 metres below.

Preliminary investigations show the bus could have developed brake failure and the driver could not negotiate the sharp corner at the bridge.
