The National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetangula, has upheld Azimio Members of Parliament’s decision to remove Nominated MP Sabina Chege from her position as Deputy Minority Whip.
Speaker Wetangula confirmed her dismissal from the parliamentary role in a ruling issued on October 25.
Chege has been replaced by Mark Mwenje, MP for Embakasi West.
“Currently there is no bar against the decision made by the minority party to replace its whip. In this regard, Mark Mwenje replaces Sabina Chege as the deputy whip of Minority party,” read the speaker of the National Assembly.
Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi had written to Speaker Moses Wetangula to inform him of Azimio La Umoja’s decision to remove Chege as Minority Deputy Whip, a decision that Jubilee MPs strongly opposed.
Sabina Chege received support from Kenya Kwanza and Jubilee MPs, while ODM and Wiper lawmakers affiliated with Azimio urged the Speaker to accept her removal following communication from Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi.
Wetangula had clarified that the request to remove the Nominated MP as Deputy Minority Whip would be fair and legal.
The Azimio Coalition accused the Nominated MP of repeatedly defying official party positions and associating with Kenya Kwanza.
The ruling also comes in response to Opiyo Wandayi’s complaints about the delays in replacing Nominated MP Sabina Chege as Deputy Minority Whip with Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje.
“We are giving a notice that if the court orders issued on 9th October are not affected by the Speaker for Hon Mark Mwenje to be the Deputy Minority Whip then it will not be business as usual. This joke has dragged on for too long and it must come to an end,” Wandayi said.
