Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has strongly refuted claims linking him to the hiring of goons and incitement of violence during recent protests in the city, describing the allegations as “malicious, baseless, and politically motivated.”
In a detailed statement issued on Sunday 22 June, Sakaja decried what he termed as a smear campaign aimed at damaging his reputation and diverting public attention from the real issues raised by protesting youth.
“In my entire political career, I have never used violence to gain power. My record speaks for itself — my mantra remains Siasa Safi,” said Sakaja.
The governor alleged that unnamed politicians orchestrated the chaos and attempted to pin the blame on him by dressing hired thugs in Nairobi County accessories, such as Dishi na County watches, to create a false impression that they were county employees.
“This is an old tactic — dress your supporters in your rival’s colours and unleash them on the public. It’s dishonest and dangerous,” he said.
Governor Sakaja noted that he had consulted with police commanders to ensure peaceful demonstrations are protected and urged citizens to distinguish between genuine protesters and infiltrators.
The governor further condemned the violence that marred protests over the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang’, who died in police custody, and the shooting of protester Boniface Kariuki.
“Diverting attention to unverified allegations against me is an injustice to the victims and to business owners who have suffered losses,” he stated.
Sakaja emphasized his administration’s support for constitutional freedoms, pointing to past instances where the county has provided ambulances, venues, and public health services during lawful protests.
“We must protect the right to demonstrate peacefully, and equally expose those who hijack this right for selfish political ends,” he concluded.
