NTSA: 1,600 People Killed In Road Accidents This Year

    Since the beginning of this year, 1,679 people have died in traffic accidents, with pedestrians accounting for the majority of fatalities (571), followed by motorcycle operators (449).

    According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), this is a 4% decrease from the same period last year, when 1,756 people died in road accidents across the country.

    The authority has now partnered with ten counties across major roads on a road safety campaign aimed at reducing the number of fatal accidents in the country.

    According to NTSA Director General George Njau, the agency has increased signage along major roads and has continued to improve the roads by filling potholes.

    According to statistics, all motorists were affected by the fatal accidents.

    During a meeting with the counties in Naivasha, Njau stated that an intelligence road management and safety system that will monitor and track PSVs would be implemented in the coming days.

    In this programme, the NTSA will assist PSV operators in forming transportation committees and addressing the increasing number of accidents involving boda boda operators.

    Pedestrians and motorcycle riders, according to Dr Duncan Kibogong, the deputy director in charge of road safety, were the most affected by the fatal accidents.
