The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has warned motorists and other road users to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue to fall across different parts of the country, creating dangerous road conditions.
The authority noted that rainfall and fog in several areas have significantly reduced visibility and made many roads slippery, increasing the risk of accidents.
In a statement shared on X on Friday, March 6, 2026, NTSA urged the public to take extra precautions while travelling during the rainy season and reminded drivers, passengers and pedestrians that road safety depends on everyone playing their part responsibly.
“With the onset of the heavy rains across the country as advised by the weatherman, the Authority cautions the Public of potentially hazardous road conditions. The ongoing rainfall and foggy conditions in some areas are significantly increasing road risks due to reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces,” the statement reads

The authority also appealed to motorists to remain careful on the roads and to think about the safety of other road users while travelling during the ongoing rains.
“We appeal to motorists to be extra cautious, and mindful of their safety and that of other road users. We urge pedestrians to use designated crossing points to avoid unnecessary risks. Passengers are also encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety by speaking out and asking the driver to stop if the situation becomes unsafe,” the statement reads.
Practical measures
NTSA further shared several practical measures drivers should follow to reduce the risk of accidents while driving in rainy conditions, noting that simple steps can save lives during poor weather.
“Removal of stalled vehicles as soon as possible,” the statement reads.
The authority emphasised that keeping a reasonable distance from the vehicle ahead is important because braking becomes more difficult on wet and slippery roads.
“Keep safe distance from the vehicle ahead,” NTSA stated
Drivers were also reminded to reduce speed because sudden braking is harder in wet weather, making careful driving even more necessary during heavy rains.
“To drive slowly as halting completely in rainy conditions is difficult,” the authority stated
NTSA also advised motorists to switch on their headlights whenever it rains so that other drivers on the road can clearly see oncoming vehicles.
“To turn headlights on whenever it’s raining to increase visibility for oncoming traffic,” the statement reads.

The authority further urged drivers to ensure their vehicles have working windshield wipers so they can maintain clear visibility when driving through heavy rain.
“Always use your windshield wipers to clear raindrops from the glass,” the statement reads.
It also warned motorists against driving through flooded roads, noting that such decisions often lead to avoidable accidents and loss of life.
“Motorists are strongly advised not to attempt to drive through flooded roads,” the authority stated
NTSA concluded by reminding all road users that safety on Kenyan roads depends on shared responsibility and cooperation among drivers, passengers and pedestrians.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Let us all work together to make our roads safer,” the statement reads.
