NTSA seeks new Director General as Njao’s term nears end

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has advertised the position of Director General as George Njao is set to exit after serving two terms.

In a notice on Tuesday, November 4, the authority invited suitable and qualified candidates to apply for the position.

“The Authority is seeking to recruit an individual who will provide strategic leadership to the Authority to deliver on its mandate and fulfil its Vision and Mission,’ read the notice in part.

The Director General is tasked with providing leadership in implementing the Authority’s business plans and strategy, overseeing planning, development, and execution of NTSA programmes, cooperating with lead agencies and organizations locally and globally in the road transport sub-sector, and supporting the NTSA board in articulating and promoting the Authority’s Vision in line with its mandate, powers, and functions.

Other roles include developing and monitoring the operational, financial, workforce, and other plans in line with the Authority’s mandate, safeguarding the Authority’s assets, establishing a productive workplace culture that fosters staff engagement, satisfaction, and well-being, and managing the entity’s reputation by building and maintaining a positive reputation. 

Further, the office holder identifies and manages organizational risks arising from resource constraints, unexpected situations, and changes in the operating environment, and ensures implementation of the resolutions of the board and the interface between the board and management.

Interested candidates for the position are required to have a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in either Engineering, Business Management, Sciences, Technology, Commerce, Social Sciences, Education, Law, or any other related field from a recognized university.

The candidates should have at least 15 years’ experience in the public or private sector, of which 5 years should be at a senior management level, have taken a leadership course lasting not less than six weeks from a recognized institution, be visionary, self-driven, transformative, and result-oriented strategic leader/thinker, and be highly accountable in decision making and of integrity.

Candidates should also possess strong interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multi-ethnic environment while demonstrating sensitivity to diversity and inclusion.

They should have excellent organizational, reporting, negotiation, resource mobilization, and stakeholder management abilities, as well as proven leadership, mentorship, and coaching skills, and must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.

Interested and qualified candidates should send their sealed applications by registered post or courier services, attaching a detailed Curriculum Vitae, stating their current position, remuneration, and telephone contact, names and contacts of three referees.

They should also attach copies of academic, professional certificates, and testimonials.

In addition, they should submit a valid Tax Compliance Certificate from Kenya Revenue Authority ( KRA), a report from a Credit Reference Bureau (CRB), a clearance Certificate from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), a clearance Certificate from Higher Education Loans Board ( HELB), and a certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The Applications should be clearly marked APPLICATION FOR DIRECTOR GENERAL REF: NTSA/ DG/BOD/11/2025 and should be addressed to the Chairman, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), P.O. Box 3602-00506, Nairobi.

The deadline for submitting the applications is November 28, 2025, at 5.00 pm.

Njao has served as the NTSA Director General for two terms since November 2019, after replacing Francis Meja.

His second term commenced in 2022, when the then Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen reappointed him following recommendations by the NTSA Board.

In April 2023, Njao was suspended from the authority following a surge in accidents in the country at the time. Njao was, however, reinstated to the position in May 2023.
