The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has summoned officials of Risen Sacco and Royal Swift Express Limited following two separate road traffic crashes along Enterprise Road and the Nairobi-Namanga Highway that left several people dead and others injured.

In a statement, NTSA referenced the fatal crash involving a Public Service Vehicle operated by Risen Sacco along Enterprise Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area, which claimed at least four lives and left 15 others injured.

“The Authority is saddened by the fatal road traffic crash involving a Public Service Vehicle operated by Risen Sacco along Enterprise Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area,” NTSA said.

According to eyewitness accounts, a customized matatu, popularly known as Nganya, was allegedly attempting dangerous stunts when the driver lost control.

The vehicle overturned along the busy road, trapping several passengers inside the wreckage before emergency responders and members of the public moved in to assist.

Images from the scene showed the extensively damaged matatu lying on its side as rescue operations continued.

The victims include three passengers and a female pedestrian estimated to be about 30 years old.

Police said the 15 injured passengers were taken to various hospitals for treatment after sustaining injuries of varying severity.

NTSA said it had also received reports of a separate non-fatal crash along the Nairobi-Namanga Highway involving a vehicle operated by Royal Swift Express Limited.

“We remain committed to thorough investigations, and we will take appropriate action,” the Authority stated.

The regulator urged all Public Service Vehicle operators and crew members to exercise maximum caution and strictly adhere to traffic rules as investigations into both incidents continue.
