The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced a robust, multi-pronged campaign, including the retesting of flagged drivers, as part of intensified efforts to curb the alarming number of road fatalities ahead of the busy festive season.
Unveiled during the commemoration of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims, the initiative is built on the Safe System Approach.
Acting Director General Eng. Angela Wanjira emphasized the need for a unified front, stating, “Working together, we can turn this season into a model for Vision Zero, ensuring Kenyans arrive home safely.”
Key strategies include collaborating with the National Police Service (NPS) to intensify targeted, multi-agency strategies focused on prevention; enforcing IRSMS data transmission for real-time monitoring of PSVs and commercial fleets; and localizing road safety awareness drives to prioritize seat belt usage, speed, and fatigue management.
The NTSA will specifically retest drivers who are flagged via the Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS) and those captured during enforcement initiatives to formally ascertain their competencies.
Furthermore, the Authority plans to empower passengers by launching education drives at bus termini, encouraging them to report traffic violations like speeding, drunk driving, and dangerous overtaking.
The campaign will also introduce free pre-festive inspection clinics at bus termini to enhance vehicle safety checks before the holiday travel peak.
