New York City Mayor Eric Adams, 64, is facing federal criminal charges, making him the first sitting mayor in the city’s history to be indicted.
According to CBS News, the charges are linked to ongoing corruption investigations targeting top officials within Adams’ administration.
In a video statement released late Wednesday, Adams vowed to fight the charges, maintaining his innocence and requesting an immediate trial.
“I will fight these injustices with every ounce of my strength and my spirit,” he declared, urging New Yorkers for “prayers and patience.”
The indictment, expected to be unsealed Thursday, comes nearly a year after federal agents seized Adams’ electronic devices and searched the home of his chief fundraiser, Brianna Suggs.
Investigations have focused on potential illegal campaign donations tied to foreign governments, including Turkey and five other countries.
Despite growing calls for his resignation, including from U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Adams remains steadfast in his decision to stay in office.
Ocasio-Cortez argued Adams could no longer effectively govern, citing recent resignations and vacancies in his administration.
Governor Kathy Hochul has yet to comment on the situation. If Adams were to step down, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams would serve as acting mayor
