‘Msaliti’ Nyeri MP Heckled For Supporting Gachagua Impeachment

Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) Duncan Maina Mathenge faced a hostile crowd on Monday, November 10, while attempting to defend his constituents against the County Government’s decision to relocate the bus terminus.

Mathenge was heckled and denied a chance to speak by the residents. The heckling was attributed to his decision to vote in favor of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment in the National Assembly on October 8, 2024.

Nyeri Town residents accused Mathenge of betraying Gachagua, as they hail from the same county.

In a show of solidarity, Mathenge had joined the matatu operators protesting the relocation of their bus terminus by the administration led by Governor Mutahi Kahiga.

However, he was met with hostility and was an unwelcome visitor in his own constituency.

Despite efforts to calm his constituents, Mathenge’s attempts were futile. Even locals who were merely observing the events joined the matatu operators in heckling the MP.

The legislator finally managed to address the matatu operators after the crowd calmed down.

He accused Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga of making decisions without consulting the people and chest-thumping.

Mathenge vowed not to allow the matatu operators to be relocated to another area.

“Our Governor is used to chest-thumping politics. Because of that, we also want to tell him that we will reciprocate the same towards him,” the Nyeri Town legislator lashed out at Governor Kahiga.

Nyeri Town MP’s heckling comes at a time when residents from Mount Kenya are reeling from the former Deputy President’s impeachment.
