Detectives have recovered the firearm stolen from a civilian firearm holder in Chaka, Nyeri County, in the middle of last month.
The firearm, a Ceska pistol loaded with 14 9mm rounds and an extra magazine with a similar number of rounds, was stolen from a civilian member of staff at the National Police College Main Campus-Kiganjo.
The man was driving his vehicle from the country’s premier police training institution along the Marua-Chaka road shortly after 7 p.m. when he was accosted by a crowd celebrating the announcement of presidential election results.
A gang of individuals seized a bag off the back seat of his car and fled to an unidentified location as the crowd surrounding his vehicle chanted songs of victory.
The Ceska pistol, a firearm certificate, a wallet, and other valuables were all stolen from the bag. Following the report of the incident at Kiganjo police station, detectives from the Crime Research & Intelligence Bureau, as well as a specialized team of sleuths from the Nairobi regional command, were dispatched to Kiganjo to search for the firearm.
Several suspects were placed at the scene of the crime using forensics, and after further analysis at the DCI National Forensic laboratory, a suspect identified as Charles Wangui was arrested.
The suspect led the detectives to a farm in Chaka, where he had hidden the firearm and two magazines, each loaded with 28 rounds of 9mm ammunition, in a shallow hole.
