Former Migori County Governor Okoth Obado testified in court on Today, April 24, 2025, stating that he did not end his relationship with Sharon Otieno because of her pregnancy.
Speaking during a re-examination by his lawyer Roger Sagana at the Milimani High Court, Obado clarified that the relationship ended due to what he described as “inconsistencies,” not public exposure or the pregnancy.
“My lady, I did not terminate my relationship with Sharon because it became public. I chose to end it because of inconsistencies,” he said.
He further explained that the relationship had already ended by the time the public became aware of it.
“People only came to know about the relationship after we had already broken up,” Obado testified.
According to him, the affair gained attention after Sharon herself began speaking about it.
“Our relationship might have become an open secret after the late Sharon started talking about it. That’s just my perception,” he added.
When asked by his lawyer whether he was comfortable with Sharon carrying his child, Obado said he had no objections.
“When she informed me about the pregnancy, I told her it was okay—I had no issues with it,” he responded.
Obado also revealed that he continued supporting Sharon financially even after their relationship ended in February or March 2018. He claimed to have assisted her in growing her business and provided upkeep support until her death.
He told the court he even gave her money for medical insurance during her pregnancy.
Additionally, he mentioned that the Investigating Officer, Nicholas Ole Sena, confirmed that he was still providing support directly to Sharon until another individual, referred to as the late Mula, got involved.
“In the beginning, I helped her with her business. After the breakup, the support was scaled back to basic upkeep. Still, I had plans to buy land and build her a house,” Obado said.
He emphasized that the plan to build her a house was motivated by a desire to provide a stable home for the child she was expecting with him.
“In the meantime, while we waited for the house to be built, she suggested moving from her mother’s house to a rented place in Homa Bay town, which I agreed to,” he added.
Obado noted that Sharon initially expressed interest in a more expensive house in Nairobi or Kisumu, but he preferred the more affordable option in Homa Bay.
“Sharon had her preferences, but it was the late Mula who eventually convinced her to accept the plan for the Homa Bay home,” he said.
During the session, a message Sharon allegedly sent to Obado on August 17, 2018, was presented in court. In it, she thanked him for sending Ksh100,000.
“I got the Ksh100,000 you sent me. We will arrange how to pay for the house tomorrow,” Obado read from the message.
The court also announced that the defense hearings for his co-accused, Michael Oyamo and Casper Obiero, are scheduled to continue from May 19 to May 23, 2025.
