Obinna unveils DJ Afro as commentator for Majembe vs Mbavu the Destroyer fight

Kenya’s most beloved movie narrator, DJ Afro, is set to bring his iconic voice to a boxing ring for the very first time, providing live commentary for the much-anticipated Majembe versus Mbavu Destroyer amateur boxing fight.

Comedian Oga Obina, one of the key organisers behind the event, confirmed the news through an Instagram post on April 2.

The fight, branded as Vurugu Fight Night, is scheduled for this Saturday, April 4, at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi, a venue that holds thousands of fans, with over 2000 fan tickets available for the duel.

DJ Afro, whose real name is James Mwangi, also known as James Muigai or DJ Amingos, is a household name in both Kenya and Tanzania, with a fanbase that stretches across generations.

He built his legendary status by dubbing and narrating international action, kung-fu, and Indian films in Swahili, Sheng, and Kikuyu, making foreign content feel authentically Kenyan and deeply entertaining.

His genius was never just translation. DJ Afro would rewrite entire storylines using Kenyan slang and humour, turning Hollywood and Bollywood characters into people that ordinary Kenyans could laugh at and relate to.

Catchphrases like “Pozi tena pozi kabisa” became part of everyday conversation, proving how powerfully his work shaped an entire generation that grew up watching his Video Compact Discs (VCDs) in local video halls.

Before streaming existed, his affordable VCDs were how millions accessed entertainment. Saving lunch money just to watch a DJ Afro narration after school was a deeply cherished ritual for Kenyan youth.

Beyond DJ Afro, the fight itself has attracted major political attention, with top figures pulling out their chequebooks to back the two amateur boxers who went viral and captured the country’s imagination.

President William Ruto, for instance, pledged Ksh1 million to each boxer, amounting to Ksh 2 million in direct support. The pledge was delivered publicly through Lang’ata MP Jalang’o. Interestingly, President William Ruto stated categorically that he supports both fighters.

On the other hand, businessman Oketch Salah, affiliated to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, contributed Ksh200,000 in cash, while Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri reportedly went further, pledging a hefty Ksh2 million towards the fight.

The duel has also attracted tens of brands, who are willing to sponsor part of the match in one way or another. One interesting prize for the victor was that one sponsor officially joined the event as a primary partner and unveiled a brand-new Toyota Noah as the ultimate prize.

With DJ Afro on the microphone, presidential backing, and millions already committed, the Majembe versus Mbavu Destroyer bout this Saturday is shaping up to be one of Kenya’s most unforgettable live spectacles.
