ODM Joins Azimio, Endorses Raila Presidency

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has agreed to join the Azimio La Umoja coalition.

The decision was made during the National Executive Council meeting, according to the party’s Secretary-General, Edwin Sifuna, who also proposed Raila Odinga as the presidential candidate.

It also proposed to the national governing council that the disability league be included in the party constitution.

Other recommendations include using consensus, direct nominations, and universal suffrage in the forthcoming nomination.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the meeting also voted to postpone party elections for new officials until sometime next year, according to Sifuna.

The move by ODM is a setback for billionaire Jimi Wanjigi, who has been vying for the presidential ticket.

Wanjigi has gone to court to contest the next ODM NDC, claiming that it was convened improperly.

The businessman, who has since launched his candidacy for the presidency, petitioned the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal through proxies.

In his petition, the businessman had enlisted the support of 15 regional ODM chairman.
